The Government of the Bahamas is one of the most politically stable in the Western Hemisphere and has been a parliamentary democracy since it gained independence in 1979. It is an independent member of the Commonwealth and its legal system is based largely on British law.

The currency of the Bahamas is the Bahamian dollar which is linked to, and on a par with the US dollar, which gives the currency a much valued stability. US dollars and Bahamian dollars are used interchangeably throughout the Bahamas
Immigration requirements are straightforward: Those wishing to visit the Bahamas can (subject to satisfying Immigration requirements) normally be admitted for up to 8 months without further status requirements. For longer stays without leaving the country it will be necessary to obtain either a Home Owner's Certificate or a Certificate of Permanent Residence. These can be applied for through the Immigration Department in Nassau. However, it should be noted that non-Bahamians must obtain a work permit before working in the Bahamas.
There is no income tax, inheritance tax, capital gains tax, corporation tax or VAT in the Bahamas and is therefore an efficient tax planning environment.
